What It Tastes Like

A red eye is intense, bold, and straightforward—regular drip coffee with an espresso shot added. It tastes like strong coffee, amplified. There's no milk, no sweetness, just pure, concentrated coffee flavor.

The espresso adds depth and richness to the drip coffee. It's for people who want serious caffeine and serious coffee taste.

How to Order

Simple version: "I'll have a red eye, please"

Variations:

  • Black eye = drip coffee + 2 shots espresso (even stronger)
  • Dead eye = drip coffee + 3 shots espresso (maximum caffeine, rarely ordered)

Note: This drink is called different things in different places:

  • "Red eye" (most common in US)
  • "Shot in the dark" (Pacific Northwest)
  • "Hammerhead" (some regions)
  • "Depth charge" (rare)

If the café doesn't recognize the name, say: "Regular coffee with a shot of espresso, please"

Customize It

Strength:

  • Standard red eye = 1 espresso shot
  • Black eye = 2 shots
  • Dead eye / triple red eye = 3 shots (only for the brave)

Additions: You can add cream or sugar, but most red eye drinkers take it black. Adding milk defeats the purpose—if you want coffee with milk, order a latte.

Size: Usually ordered in regular coffee sizes (small, medium, large). The espresso shot(s) are added to whatever size drip coffee you order.

Common Confusion

"How much caffeine is in this?" A lot. A regular coffee (12 oz) has about 180mg caffeine. Add one espresso shot (75mg) and you're at 255mg total. A black eye (2 shots) is around 330mg. For reference, the recommended daily limit is 400mg.

"Why would anyone order this?"

  • Long drives or overnight shifts
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Coffee enthusiasts who want maximum flavor
  • People who find regular coffee too weak

"Is it the same as an americano?" No. An americano is espresso + hot water. A red eye is drip coffee + espresso. The flavor is different because drip coffee and espresso are brewed differently.

"Will this make me jittery?" Probably, especially if you're not a regular heavy coffee drinker. Start with one shot (red eye) before graduating to a black eye. The dead eye is genuinely excessive.

When to Order

Good times:

  • Early morning long drive
  • Pulling an all-nighter
  • You've been awake for 20+ hours and need to stay alert
  • You genuinely love strong coffee

Bad times:

  • After 2pm (unless you want to be awake until 3am)
  • First coffee of the day if you're caffeine-sensitive
  • Before an important meeting where you need steady hands

Try Next

If you like strong coffee but want a different preparation, try an americano (espresso + water, no drip coffee) or cold brew (concentrated, smooth, less acidic).
